Docker & Kubernetes on Your CV: How to Showcase Them So Employers Actually Notice
Container experience is table stakes — but few CVs show real K8s depth. Here's how to demonstrate production-grade orchestration expertise.
Docker and Kubernetes have become expected competencies across a wide range of engineering roles — backend developers, platform engineers, DevOps engineers, SREs, and cloud architects all need them. That ubiquity creates the same problem as any widely claimed skill: listing "Docker/Kubernetes" on your CV is nearly meaningless without context, because every candidate does it.

Experience bullets: Kubernetes and Docker should appear in bullets where they drove operational outcomes — reliability improvements, cost reductions, deployment frequency increases, incident reductions. Avoid listing them as configuration work with no downstream result.

Certifications and Credentials
Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) — CNCF: The gold standard for Kubernetes operations roles. Performance-based exam (hands-on kubectl and YAML, not multiple choice). Widely respected and strongly recommended for platform engineers and SREs.
Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD) — CNCF: More developer-focused than CKA — covers Pod design, configuration, services, and observability. Appropriate for backend developers with significant Kubernetes work.
Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist (CKS) — CNCF: Advanced security-focused cert requiring an active CKA. High signal for security-conscious platform roles.
Docker Certified Associate (DCA): Legitimate but slightly less respected than CNCF certs in engineering circles. Worth listing for roles where Docker is a primary skill area.

Common Mistakes That Weaken Container CVs
"Docker and Kubernetes experience" with no specifics. Without context, this tells an interviewer nothing about whether you have ever touched production or completed a single tutorial. Specify the cluster size, the workload type, the cloud provider, and at least one operational challenge you navigated.
Listing Kubernetes without Helm or GitOps tools. In 2026, raw kubectl in production is rare. Any Kubernetes role will ask about your deployment tooling. If you have not worked with Helm or ArgoCD/Flux, it is worth gaining that experience before applying to senior roles.
Conflating Docker Compose with Kubernetes. Docker Compose is a development and small-scale deployment tool. Kubernetes is a production orchestration platform. Candidates who describe Docker Compose work in the same terms as Kubernetes production work raise questions about their understanding of the distinction.
No mention of security practices. Kubernetes security hygiene — non-root containers, read-only root filesystems, network policies, RBAC, admission controllers — is expected at mid-to-senior level. Omitting it suggests you have never had to think about it, which is a gap in any production infrastructure role.
Treating Kubernetes as a black box. Platform engineers who can describe Kubernetes internals — the scheduler, etcd, the control plane components, how kubelet communicates with the API server — are significantly more credible than those who know only the user-facing resources. If you have debugged cluster-level issues (node pressure evictions, API server rate limiting, etcd compaction), mention it.
