Free AI Cover Letter Generators Compared (2026)

Three free AI cover letter generators and what each page says about signup, limits and downloads, read 26 Oct 2026. Plus a free checker for the draft.

Free AI cover letter generators draft a letter from your resume and a job ad, and the free part usually comes with a catch: a sign-up, a use counter, or a resume upload. Three are compared below, each from the vendor's own page with the date we read it.

Disclosure: we build NextCV. NextCV does not offer a free cover letter generator; its free tool is a cover letter checker, and its paid tailoring is sold as credit packs. We say where it fits at the end. This comparison rests on what each vendor publishes on its own page. We did not generate letters with any of the three, so we say nothing about the quality of their writing.

How we compared them

On 26 October 2026 we read each tool's cover letter page and recorded only what it states: cost, whether an account is needed, limits, required input, and download options. Where a page was silent we say so. We also tried Resume Worded's cover letter page, which did not describe a generator or its limits, and Canva's, which returned HTTP 403 to our request, so neither is in the table. Vendors change pages often, so treat everything below as the page on that date.

The short version

Tool Cost and account, per its page Input it asks for Download, per its page Source, date read
Enhancv "Free to use with no sign-up required". No cap on letters stated Resume upload (PDF or DOCX, max 2MB) and a pasted job ad No download button described; page says to paste the result into a text editor enhancv.com/cover-letter-generator, 26 Oct 2026
GotResumeBuilder "You can generate a cover letter draft on this page without signing up". Saving needs a free account; Premium is paid, no price on the page Resume (pasted or uploaded) and a job description; you pick tone and length Not described gotresumebuilder.com/cover-letter-generator, 26 Oct 2026
Sheets Resume Described as free and unlimited, but guests see a "3 uses left" counter and then a free account is required "to prevent spam usage" Company name and job title required; job description and resume optional "Download PDF", "Print" and "Copy Letter" sheetsresume.com/cover-letter, 26 Oct 2026

The three, one at a time

Enhancv

Enhancv's page is the clearest about price: free, no login, no hidden payments. The trade is input. It wants your resume as a PDF or DOCX under 2MB and the job ad pasted in, and says the letter should come out at roughly 250 to 400 words, one page. The page describes no download button, so expect to copy the text out. It also mentions a separate cover letter builder that makes a PDF; the page does not say whether that part costs anything.

GotResumeBuilder

GotResumeBuilder says you can generate a draft without signing up, and that an account is needed only to save. It asks for a resume and a job description, lets you choose a tone and a length, and says a draft takes about 30 seconds. Its page says Premium unlocks saved letters and 12 letter types but gives no price. It does not state a limit on how many drafts you can make, and it does not describe how to export one.

Sheets Resume

Sheets Resume offers the most export options on its page: PDF download, print and copy. It also asks for the least: company name and job title are the only required fields. The catch is the counter. Guests see "3 uses left" and are then asked to make a free account. The page calls the tool unlimited and free, which holds once you register.

What a generator can and can't do

A generator turns your resume and a job ad into a plausible first draft. It does not know which of your achievements matter most for this employer, and it cannot tell whether a line it wrote is true of you. Two practical rules:

  1. Give it the real job ad, not just a title. Drafts that echo the ad's own terms read as relevant; drafts built from a title alone read as generic.
  2. Edit the draft against your resume. Delete any claim you could not back up in an interview, and swap one generic sentence for a concrete example.

For what the finished letter should contain, see our cover letter writing guide.

Check the draft before you send it

Once you have a draft, a checker will tell you what a recruiter skimming it would notice. NextCV's free cover letter checker gives a score and flags issues. Its page says it is free with no signup, runs in your browser, and that nothing you paste is uploaded or stored. It checks a letter; it does not write one.

Where NextCV fits

If you want the whole application tailored rather than one letter drafted, NextCV generates a CV and cover letter for each job from your CV and the posting. It is sold as one-time credit packs with no subscription, see pricing. Its free previews are watermarked. If a free draft plus a free check is enough, you do not need it. For the CV side of the same choice, see the best AI resume tailoring tools compared.
