What is the best AI tool to tailor a CV to a job description?

It depends on what you want changed. Tools that rewrite the whole CV against the posting (NextCV, Rezi, Kickresume) save the most time. Tools that only score keyword overlap (Jobscan, Resume Worded) tell you what is missing but leave the rewriting to you. If you apply in bursts rather than continuously, a pay-once tool costs less than a subscription you forget to cancel.

Do these tools just stuff keywords into a CV?

Some do, and it reads badly to a human. Keyword stuffing also fails the part of screening that a person does. A tailoring tool worth using reorders and rewrites your real experience so the relevant work comes first in the posting's own language, and it should never add skills or employers you do not have.

Is tailoring a CV per job actually worth the time?

It is where a role is screened by software and then skimmed in seconds by a person. Both filters reward a CV whose top third matches the posting. Tailoring matters less for speculative applications and for roles filled through referral.

Can I just use ChatGPT to tailor my CV?

You can, and it works if you paste both the job ad and your full CV and then check what it invented. The weaknesses are consistency and format: you write the prompt each time, the output arrives as chat text you still have to lay out, and general-purpose models happily embellish. Purpose-built tools fix the format and constrain the rewrite.

The useful split is not free versus paid. It is tools that rewrite your CV against the posting, tools that only score it, and general chatbots that do either if you write the prompt. Prices below were read on each vendor's own pricing page in September 2026.

Tailoring a CV per application is the advice everyone gives and almost nobody follows, because doing it by hand takes 20–40 minutes per job. That is what these tools compress. What they actually do, though, differs more than their marketing suggests.

Disclosure: we build NextCV, which is one of the tools below. We have not paid for accounts on every competing tool, so this is a comparison of what each vendor documents and charges, not a hands-on bake-off. Where we could not verify something on the vendor's own site, we say so instead of guessing.

How we compared them

For each tool we read its own pricing page and feature documentation and recorded four things:

Does it change the CV, or just report on it? A score is not a rewrite.
What does the free tier really include? Whether a card is required, whether the download is watermarked or blocked, and how many runs you get.
What comes out? A downloadable document, or text to paste somewhere else.
What does it cost for 15 applications? Roughly one month of a serious job search.

The three groups

1. Tools that rewrite the CV against the ad

NextCV (ours). You build a profile once or upload an existing CV, paste the job ad, and it rewrites the experience bullets, reorders sections and drafts a matching cover letter in English, Swedish or French. Credits are one-time: $5 for one application, $19 for 15, $39 for 50, and they never expire. There is no subscription and nothing auto-renews. Free previews are watermarked, so you see the full output before paying. What it deliberately does not have: a drag-and-drop design editor or a job tracker. If you want to arrange boxes on a page, this is the wrong tool.

Rezi. An ATS-first builder with a real per-job feature: upload the target job description and it targets keywords and rewrites content against it. Free covers 1 resume and 3 PDF downloads. Pro is $29/month, and there is a $149 lifetime option, which is unusual and worth knowing about if you expect to job hunt repeatedly.

Kickresume. A large template library plus an AI writer that drafts sections from a job title or ad, with an ATS check alongside. Pricing is subscription-only: €24 monthly, €54 quarterly, €96 yearly, and paid plans auto-renew. The free tier is genuinely usable for building a CV, but the AI depth sits behind the subscription.

2. Tools that score, and leave the writing to you

Jobscan. The best-known keyword matcher: paste CV and ad, get a match rate and a list of missing terms. It does not rewrite anything. Five free scans a month is enough to sanity-check a handful of applications; beyond that it is $49.95/month or $89.95 a quarter, which is the most expensive option here.

Resume Worded. A scorer with line-by-line suggestions, plus LinkedIn feedback. Useful for improving a CV in general, not for tailoring to one posting. Its pricing only renders in a live browser, so check it before signing up, and note that its own copy describes an auto-renewing subscription.

Enhancv. Strong on design, and its builder tells you which keywords the posting expects. The free plan runs 7 days, adds Enhancv branding and caps you at 12 section items. Prices are country-specific: shown to us as kr599 per quarter, while the site's own headline advertises "from $16.50", which is the six-month plan's monthly equivalent rather than a monthly price.

3. General tools you can bend to the job

ChatGPT. Paste the ad and your CV, ask for a rewrite, and it will do it — often well. Three caveats. You write the prompt every time, so quality swings with the prompt. The output is chat text, so layout is your problem. And general models embellish: check every number, date and job title before it goes out. Free works for occasional use; Go and Plus were kr85 and kr249 a month when we looked.

FlowCV. Currently a clean, genuinely free builder — 1 resume and 1 cover letter, unlimited downloads, no watermark — rather than a tailoring tool. Its job-requirements matcher is labelled "coming soon", so don't pick it for per-ad rewriting today. Pro is €5/month billed yearly.

Teal. Best known as an application tracker with resume tools attached, which suits high-volume searches. Its pricing page blocked our automated checks, so we are not quoting numbers for it.

What to pick

You want the CV rewritten for each ad, and you apply in bursts. A pay-once tool costs less than any subscription you will forget to cancel.
Your CV is strong and you only want to know what is missing. A scorer is enough, and the free tiers may cover you.
You are applying continuously, all month, every month. A subscription with unlimited rewrites works out cheaper — just diarise the cancellation date.
You are comfortable prompting. A general chatbot does the rewrite for the price of a subscription you may already pay for. You will spend the saved money's worth of time on formatting and fact-checking.

Before you send anything

Tailoring decides whether the right words are on the page. Formatting decides whether the screening software can read them. Run the finished file through a free structural check — NextCV's CV checker is free, needs no signup, keeps nothing, and flags the parsing problems that quietly sink applications: multiple columns, text in boxes or images, unusual section headings, missing dates.
