Is there a resume builder with no subscription?

Yes, in three forms. Fully free builders such as Reactive Resume, OpenResume and Google Docs templates never charge. Pay-once tools charge a single amount with no recurring billing: NextCV sells credits from $5, Novoresume sells fixed-period Premium access that does not renew, and Rezi offers a $149 lifetime plan. Most other well-known builders are subscriptions that renew automatically until cancelled.

Why do so many resume builders charge a small trial fee first?

Because the trial converts into a recurring charge. Zety's own pricing page, for example, lists a 14-day trial that then auto-renews every 4 weeks at roughly nine times the trial price. The trial price is what you see at checkout; the renewal price is in the smaller print under it. Always read the line directly beneath the price before entering a card.

Which free resume builders have no watermark and no paywall at download?

Reactive Resume and OpenResume are open source and free with no paid tier. FlowCV's free plan includes one resume with unlimited PDF downloads and no watermark. Google Docs templates are free with a Google account. By contrast, the free plans at Zety and Resume.io only export plain TXT files, so a usable PDF requires paying.

What is the cheapest way to get an AI-tailored resume without subscribing?

Pay per application. NextCV charges $5 for one tailored CV plus cover letter, $19 for 15, or $39 for 50, as one-time purchases whose credits never expire. If you would rather not pay at all, a free builder plus a general chatbot can do the rewriting, at the cost of writing the prompt and checking the output yourself each time.

How do I check whether a resume builder will auto-renew before I pay?

Read the sentence directly under the price on the checkout or pricing page and look for the words auto-renews, billed every, or recurring. Then check the terms page for the renewal clause. If the price is described as a trial, assume it renews unless the page says otherwise. Paying with a virtual or single-use card adds a second safety net.

I was charged by a resume builder I forgot about. What can I do?

Cancel inside the account settings first so no further charge occurs, then contact the vendor's support and ask for a refund of the most recent charge, stating that you did not use the service in that period. If that fails, your card issuer can dispute a charge you did not knowingly authorise. Policies vary by vendor and country.

Resume Builders With No Subscription: Free and Pay-Once Options (2026)

Most resume builders are subscriptions, and several of the biggest sell you a trial for a couple of dollars that renews at ten times the price. But there are genuinely free builders and genuinely pay-once ones. This page sorts them by how they bill, quoting each vendor's own pricing page as of 18 September 2026.

A job search is a burst: a few weeks of intense applying, then nothing for years. A monthly subscription is the wrong shape for that. It keeps charging after you have the job, and the business model often depends on you forgetting.

Disclosure: we build NextCV, one of the pay-once tools below. Everything here is quoted from the vendors' own pricing and terms pages, not from hands-on testing of every product. We checked from Sweden, so some prices appear in euros or kronor exactly as they were shown to us. Where a vendor's pages blocked our checks, we left it out rather than quote someone else's number.

The three billing models

Free, permanently. No card, no tier above it that you need. Usually open source or backed by a bigger product.
Pay once. You pay a fixed amount for credits, a fixed period, or lifetime access. Nothing renews unless you come back and buy again.
Auto-renewing subscription. Often fronted by a cheap trial. The charge repeats every 4 weeks, month, quarter or year until you cancel.

Only the first two count as "no subscription".

Genuinely free

Reactive Resume. An open-source builder under the MIT licence with no paid tier at all. You can use the hosted version or run it yourself. Real templates and PDF export. It will not write anything for you: it is a builder, not an AI tool.

OpenResume. Also open source, and it needs no account. Its resume parser is handy for checking how software reads your file. Fewer templates than most, deliberately plain.

Google Docs templates. The option career advisers keep recommending for a reason: single column, real text, nothing for a parser to choke on. Free with a Google account.

FlowCV. The free plan covers one resume and one cover letter with unlimited PDF downloads and no watermark, which is more than most paid tools give away. Its Pro plan is a normal auto-renewing subscription, so stay on free if that matters to you.

Pay once

NextCV (ours). You buy credits, not time: $5 for one application, $19 for 15, $39 for 50. One credit rewrites your CV against a specific job ad and drafts the matching cover letter, in English, Swedish or French. Credits never expire and nothing renews. You can see a watermarked preview before paying, and unused credits are refundable for 7 days. It does not have a drag-and-drop design editor.

Novoresume. The surprise on this list. Premium is sold by the month, quarter or year, but the vendor states it is "not subscription based" and you "will not be charged automatically": you pay once for the period and it simply ends. Prices were shown to us in Swedish kronor (kr249, kr449, kr1,499), so check your local price.

Rezi. Mostly a $29/month subscription, but it also sells a $149 lifetime plan, which is rare in this market and worth it if you expect several job searches.

Subscriptions that start as a trial

These are good products. The issue is the billing shape, so go in knowing the renewal number, not just the trial number.

Zety. The free plan exports TXT only, so a PDF means paying. The Pro trial is €2.70 for 14 days, then "auto-renews at 23,70 € billed every 4 weeks". Every 4 weeks means 13 charges a year, not 12: about €308 a year if you forget. The annual plan is €71.40 up front and also auto-renews.

Resume.io. Same pattern: free plan limited to TXT, then a $2.95 7-day trial that "auto-renews to $29.95 billed every 4 weeks", or $49.95 every 3 months.

Standard Resume. $19 a month, and the terms state the subscription renews automatically each billing cycle until you cancel.

Kickresume and Jobscan. Conventional subscriptions without the trial trick: €24/month and $49.95/month respectively, both with usable free tiers.

Before you enter a card number

Read the line under the price. "Auto-renews", "billed every" and "recurring" are the words that matter.
Convert "every 4 weeks" to a year. It is 13 payments, not 12.
Check what the free plan exports. If it is TXT only, the free plan is a demo.
Set a calendar reminder for the day before renewal if you do take a trial.
Use a virtual or single-use card if your bank offers one.

Which to pick

You need a clean CV and will write it yourself: Reactive Resume, OpenResume, FlowCV free or Google Docs. Pay nothing.
You want each application tailored to its job ad without a subscription: NextCV credits, or Rezi lifetime if you will use it for years.
You want a designed template for one job search: Novoresume for a fixed period.
You are applying every week for months: a subscription can be the cheapest per application. Write the cancellation date down the day you sign up.
