Free Resume vs Job Description Match Checkers Compared (2026)
Four free tools that compare your resume to a job description: what each says it does, what sits behind a signup, and what is capped. Read 22 Oct 2026.
A free job description match checker compares your resume to one job ad and lists the skills and keywords the ad uses that your resume doesn't. Four are compared below, each linked to the vendor's own page with the date we read it. They differ mainly in what you give up to use them: an account, a weekly cap, or nothing.
Disclosure: we build NextCV, and its job match tool is one of the four. This comparison rests on what each vendor publishes on its own pages. We did not run resumes through any competitor's tool, so we say nothing about how accurate their scoring is.
How we compared them
On 22 October 2026 we read each tool's landing page and recorded only what the page states: what it compares, what is free, and whether an account is required. Where a page was silent we say so rather than guess. We tried to read Teal's resume matching page too, but it returned HTTP 403 to our request, so Teal is not in the table. Vendors change pages often, so treat everything below as the page on that date.
The short version
| Tool | What it does, per its page | Account and limits, per its page | Source, date read |
|---|---|---|---|
| NextCV (ours) | Pulls the key terms out of the ad and checks them against your CV. Skills and tools weigh most | "Free, no signup". Runs in your browser; the page says nothing is uploaded or stored. No usage cap stated | nextcv.net/en/job-match, 22 Oct 2026 |
| Resume Worded (Targeted Resume) | Compares your resume to a job description, shows missing skills and a "Relevancy Score" | Page says "it's all for free", no limits stated. Starting needs a free account and a confirmed email address | resumeworded.com/targeted-resume, 22 Oct 2026 |
| SkillSyncer | Job match scans of your resume against a posting | Free plan: "two job match scans a week" and "ten AI credits a week". "No card required". Premium lifts the caps; no price on the page we read | skillsyncer.com, 22 Oct 2026 |
| Jobscan | A resume scan against a job description, marketed as a free ATS resume score | Page states no limits and does not say whether signup is needed; its hero free-scan button jumps to an on-page uploader, while its nav and other buttons link to a signup page | jobscan.co, 22 Oct 2026 |
The four, one at a time
NextCV job match (ours)
You paste a job ad and your CV and get a keyword-coverage score plus the missing terms. The tool extracts the ad's key terms and checks them against your CV, weighting skills and tools most. It is deterministic and runs in your browser, so the same input gives the same score. The page itself says the score is "a keyword check, not a verdict on your fit" and is not an ATS score. It tells you what is missing and leaves the rewriting to you. You can use the job match tool without an account.
Resume Worded
Resume Worded's Targeted Resume tool compares your resume to a job description, lists the skills it finds missing and gives a Relevancy Score. Its page says a score under 80 suggests missing skills. The page says the tool is free and states no limits. To use it you create an account and confirm your email, so factor that in if you only want a one-off check.
SkillSyncer
SkillSyncer is the only one of the four whose page states a free-tier cap: two job match scans a week. That suits a handful of targeted applications and runs out fast if you apply widely. Its page says no card is required. Premium raises the caps and shows the specific wording to change; we are not quoting a price because the page we read did not list one.
Jobscan
Jobscan is the best-known name in this niche, but its landing page tells you the least. It promises a free scan and an ATS resume score, states no free limits, and does not say whether you need an account. Its hero free-scan button jumps to an uploader on the same page, while its nav and other buttons point to a signup page, so an account may be needed at some point. Check what the free scan includes before you rely on it.
What a match score can and can't tell you
A match score tells you which terms in an ad your resume never mentions. That is useful: if the ad asks for "stakeholder management" and your resume has the experience but not the phrase, a parser or a recruiter skimming for it may miss you.
It can't tell you whether you are a good fit, and it can't tell you how any employer's system will treat your file. The vendors say so themselves, NextCV included. Use the missing-terms list, add the ones that are true, and ignore the headline number. For how those systems read a resume, see How ATS systems actually work. To check the file's structure rather than its keywords, our roundup of free ATS resume checkers covers six tools.
Which one to pick
- You want a quick check with no account. NextCV's job match tool is built for that, and is the only one of the four whose page says so.
- You are applying to a few roles a week. SkillSyncer's cap of two scans a week is stated up front; Resume Worded states none but wants an account.
- You want to see the big-name option. Jobscan is the one most people have heard of. Read what the free scan includes first.
After the match
A match checker shows the gaps and stops there. If you would rather have the CV rewritten for each posting, NextCV's tailoring is sold as credit packs, see pricing. Credits are one-time, with no subscription. For that side of the market, see the best AI resume tailoring tools compared. If a free check is all you need, run the match and fix what it flags first.
