Profile
Data analyst with three years in e-commerce and two in local government. Why this Data Analyst CV works: what shortlisters check first
SQL, shown on the page and tested at interview
Almost every data analyst job asks for SQL, and most hiring processes include a SQL test. Name the databases you have used and the kind of work you did, such as joins across large tables, window functions and building models. Saying 'proficient in SQL' with no example is the weakest option, so add a bullet that shows the data size and what the query answered.
A decision that changed because of your analysis
Analysts are hired to improve decisions, not to build charts. For each job, give at least one bullet that says what you found, what the business did next, and the result. Revenue, cost, churn, time saved or a service rule that changed are all acceptable. A dashboard bullet should state who uses it and how often.
The tools in the advert
Job adverts name the BI tool, whether that is Power BI, Tableau, Looker or Qlik, and the language, Python or R. Name exactly what you have used and how recently. Many applicant tracking systems filter by these words. If you know a tool only from a course, say so under projects rather than skills in your job history.
Data quality and communication
Hiring managers know that much of the job is cleaning data and explaining results to people who do not code. Show both: the checks, tests or models that improved the data, and the audiences you report to. A line about presenting to directors or training colleagues counts as evidence of communication.
A portfolio, if you are early in your career
If you have under two years of experience, a project from public data shows how you think. Link it by name rather than a URL on the CV text, keep it to one or two projects, and describe the question, the data, the method and the finding. Recruiters will look at one project, not ten.
Key skills recruiters look for
How to write each section of a Data Analyst CV
Profile
Say what data you work with, how big it is, the tools you use daily, and the area you are strongest in, such as product, marketing, finance or operations. Keep to three or four sentences. Leave out claims such as 'data-driven' because every analyst CV says it.
Experience
Write each bullet as action, data and result. 'Analysed 14 months of cancellation data in SQL and found X, which led to Y' is the model. Give two or three bullets on analysis that changed something, one on reporting or dashboards, and one on data quality or tooling.
Education
Give the degree, university and classification. Add a line on a dissertation only if it used methods that match the job. For a career changer, list a data bootcamp or certificate with its year, and put your project work above it.
Skills
List tools, languages and methods you can use in an interview: SQL dialects, Python libraries, BI tools, statistics methods. Put the ones in the advert first. Do not list tools you have only watched a video about.
Projects and portfolio
Add one or two projects with the question, data source, tools and result in one or two lines each. Prefer a project with a real question over a standard tutorial dataset, and be ready to talk about every choice you made in it.
More example bullet points
Strong Data Analyst CVs lead with measurable impact. Here are examples of the kind of bullets that make recruiters stop scrolling:
Built executive dashboard in Tableau tracking 15 KPIs across 4 business units, reducing monthly reporting time from 3 days to 2 hours
Identified $1.2M in cost savings through supply chain analysis, leading to renegotiation of 3 vendor contracts
Automated weekly reporting pipeline using Python and dbt, freeing 10 hours/week for strategic analysis
Common Data Analyst CV mistakes
- Listing every tool you have heard of, instead of the ones you use weekly.
- Describing dashboards without saying who uses them or what changed.
- Using 'proficient in SQL' with no example of what you did with it.
- Presenting results with no baseline, such as 'increased revenue' without the amount or period.
- Including a tutorial dataset project, such as the Titanic or house prices set, as the main portfolio piece.

Data Analyst CV FAQ
What should a data analyst put on a CV with no experience?
Lead with a degree or certificate, then one or two projects on real data, with the question, tools and finding for each. Add any work where you handled data, such as Excel reporting in another role. Name SQL and a BI tool, and be ready to show them.
How long should a data analyst CV be?
One page for under three years of experience, two pages after that. Put your profile, current role and top results on the first page, keep earlier roles short, and list projects and skills compactly at the end.
Which skills matter most for a data analyst job?
SQL, a BI tool such as Power BI or Tableau, Excel, and either Python or R for analysis. Statistics basics, data cleaning and the ability to explain results are close behind. Match the exact tools in the job advert and show them in your bullets.
Should I link my GitHub on my CV?
Only if the repositories are tidy and show analysis you are happy to discuss. A single clean project with a readme helps. A long list of unfinished tutorials works against you. Mention the project by name and make the link available when asked.
How do I show impact if I do not know the business results?
Ask your manager or the team that used your work, or use the measures you do have: hours saved, reports replaced, users of a dashboard, queries answered. Always state what changed and over what period, and do not invent a figure you cannot explain.
